ONE LAST BID FOR SURVIVAL

The season kicking off with just over two thousand in the ground, the scattered 'pitter patter' of clapping as the players take the field on their way to YET anaother defeat!!. Some burke sat behind the goal wearing a silly pair of sun glasses and a copy of the daily Echo under his arm. Kids running up and down the isles of the seats playing as there is plenty of room. The shortage of matchday programmes because they have only printed so many!!. A couple of twits singing "come on Bournemouth"!!!. The Council are thrillled to bits because there is no trouble or complaints from local residents. All the 'blue-rinse' old biddies will be happy as we now have a nice little football club on the edge of town that does not disrupt any official feathers!!!! The Council can now concentrate on the building of a new bowls club for all the local 'ponces' who seem to think that losing out football club is of no consequence.

Redemption for the homeless, under Grand Central's stars

Today, restored and rededicated, Grand Central Terminal is known as the heart of New York City. But I remember 22 years ago, when our city was ailing. The constellations on the station's domed ceiling were barely visible through the layers of grime. And commuters rushed to catch their trains hoping to avoid contact with the homeless people who camped there.

As a volunteer, I spent 700 nights in a row feeding and befriending those who called Grand Central home. In those days, the only way we knew to help was to hand out sandwiches or offer a cot for a night in a dangerous, drug-infested shelter.

Homelessness seemed incurable. Those who had succumbed to it were vilified for personifying the sad conditions of our city. Even to us, their advocates, they were victims who needed protection, incapable of doing for themselves.

Two soldiers and nine separatist militants were killed today in two separate gun battles near the Pakistan border in Indian Kashmir, an army spokesperson said. Kashmir is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent.

It was the highest number of people killed in firefights in a single day in the Himalayan region in recent months. "The contacts between soldiers and militants have increased in recent days resulting in fierce encounters," Army spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel AK Mathur said.

The latest gun battles took place in Kupwara district bordering Pakistan, nearly 90km northwest of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.

The clashes between Indian troops and Muslim militants have intensified in recent days in the mountainous region as militants come down to the plains due to the onset of bitter cold weather, officials say.

Full steam ahead: Pressure cookers are cool

The other day, a monumental event took place in my kitchen.

The slow cooker, with its chipped, plastic handle and cheerful flowered design, was removed from its home in the cabinet and carried to the basement.

Then it was replaced by my sleek, stainless steel European pressure cooker.

When I admitted this via e-mail to Vickie Smith, the Web's (if not the world's) foremost expert on pressure cookery, she replied:

"Another convert ... BWAHAHA!"

But although two of my friends are also in love with pressure cookers, it seems we are still in the minority.

Most cooks I know are terrified of the things. At the first mention of a pressure cooker, their minds are filled with images of dangerous, exploding bombs.

Hominy & Hash

A reader wrote to one newspaper with a Letter to the Editor saying he was boycotting a restaurant because they flew their ethnic flag out front.

It was a small town with only two ethnic restaurants. The general consensus was not to print it and therefore avoid being sued for lost business. The editor agreed and called the writer, suggesting a more general statement rather than targeting a given business. She wrote again and it arrived in time for publication.

The second thing that brought the subject into focus came during a lazy Sunday afternoon spent watching Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite." In the final scene of this 1971 movie, the cast and passersby are on the front steps of the grand old hotel. Over their heads and waving in the breeze is an Israeli flag in all its blue-and-white splendor.
