Easy as pie, Evens wins Bowl

You learned how to make the best with what you had," she said. "I appreciate having lived through the Depression."

Further inspiration came from Evens' home economics teacher Berniece Steward, at Bainbridge High School.

"She taught me a lot and inspired me to do the best I could do," Evens said.

After high school, Evens went on to major in home economics at Indiana University with the thought of becoming a teacher. It was during her time in college that Evens completed an internship in Benton Harbor, Mich., at a place called Fiddleman's Resort. Evens said she learned a lot about the Jewish way of cooking while at the resort.

Added inspiration came from DePauw University where Evens worked for 29 years in the administration office. It was in the cafeteria where Evens remembers watching baker Iva Hanlon make pies.

Delicious dilemmas: What to make for Valentine's Day dessert

Yes, it's the day before Valentine's Day and maybe that's a bit tardy to be considering making a dessert for tomorrow night's romantic dinner.

Right. Like any of us has time during the week to come home from work and make a cake or truffles or brownies from scratch.

I'm sure there are some dynamos out there who could be inspired by the following recipes and feel compelled to bake or create tonight, but here's another way of looking at what's before you: These are perfectly beautiful desserts that suit any occasion. And, when you do make them -- tonight, next week or next year, they'll come from the heart.

These first three recipes were provided by Victoria magazine.

Book review: Ambition and Survival: Becoming a Poet

"T hen I fell in love. I say it suddenly, and there was certainly an element of radical intrusion and transformation to it, but the sense I have is of color slowly aching into things, the world coming brilliantly, abradingly alive."

So Christian Wiman writes in "Love Bade Me Welcome," the essay that concludes Ambition and Survival: Becoming a Poet, providing it with what few such gatherings can boast of: an unexpected ending that hits you like a hard and fast blow to the center of your chest, and that I will not say anything further about.

There is nothing flashy about Wiman's style, but the more you become familiar with it — his easy tone, his way with a phrase — the more you become fond of it, and of Wiman himself. One is reminded of Whitman: "Camerado, this is no book, / Who touches this touches a man.

Oh the weather outside is frightful …

San Fran went on to win the Super Bowl, The year following that the Giants were led to the playoffs by Simms and got to the playoffs and lost to the Bears. The next year the Giants won the Super Bowl. Contrast that with Eli, who was give a much better team then Simms had in 1980, but can't get anything done. Maybe after a few more years of Eli, people will say that they didn't give Simms enough credit. Had the Giants not benched Simms under Hanley they might have another Super Bowl ring.

Talking romance with Mills and Boons' only male writer

Mills & Boon publishes 50 new titles a month and as it celebrates its 100th anniversary it is selling a book every five seconds in the UK alone. Not even the combined effects of feminism, celebrity culture, chick lit, falling literacy rates, ladette culture and the run-down state of our libraries have put a dent in the female reader’s appetite for a good dollop of romance.

The stories are translated into 26 languages and sold in about 100 international markets, with at least 1,300 writers pounding the word processor to keep up with demand. The brand is famous (Mills & Boon is in the OED, definition: "romantic story book") though the authors are almost never household names.

In the 1960s Violet Winspear – an unmarried woman who lived with her mother in Leigh-on-Sea – enjoyed a certain notoriety.

50 ways to please your lover

So thank goodness for Beyonce's blasting Crazy In Love, a thrilling confession to her partner Jay-Z that's the closest thing in modern music to the euphoric rush of finding yourself gloriously in love. It's also a fabulously affirmative reply to questions posed in the The Chi-Lites' 1970 hit Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So), from which the thumping brass hook was lifted.

6FILM Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset (1994/2004) Before Sunrise was a pleasant enough movie about two young strangers on a train - callow American Ethan Hawke and earnest Frenchwoman Julie Delpy - who agree to spend a day together in Vienna. It reminded you, possibly, of how quickly you could fall in love when you were young. But that memory becomes potent and urgent in the sequel, when the couple meet in Paris 10 years later, and realise it may not be too late 7PAINTING The Jewish Bride by Rembrandt van Rijn (1667) There are as many interpretations of this painting as there are books about Rembrandt, and although few believe that the woman is either a bride or Jewish, the 19th century name for the painting has stuck.
